"It Always Shows Up Around 16"

I’ve heard this more times than I can count.
A guy comes in, usually mid-40s or older, and says something like:
“I feel great early… but somewhere around 14, 15… definitely by 16… my back just tightens up.”

And honestly, I already know the rest of the story.
He didn’t do anything crazy.Didn’t swing out of his shoes.Didn’t hit a bad shot that caused it.
It just… shows up.
The Round That Changes
You’re playing well.Maybe one of your better rounds in a while.
Then you hit a drive on 16…
And as you start walking after it, you feel it.
That little grab in your lower back.
You stand up a little slower.Maybe put your hand there for a second.Tell yourself, “I’m good.”
But something’s different now.
You’re not swinging as freely. You’re thinking about it.Trying to protect it.
And the last few holes? They’re just not the same.
What Most Golfers Think
Usually the explanation is simple:
“I must’ve just tweaked something.”
So the next plan is:
Take a couple days off
Maybe stretch a bit more
Hope it doesn’t happen next time
But then…
Next round.
Same thing.
What’s Actually Going On
Here’s how I usually explain it to them.
It’s not that anything “went wrong” on 16.
It’s that your body finally ran out of ways to compensate.
Early in the round, you can get away with it:
A little stiffness here
A little weakness there
A little extra movement in the wrong place
But as the round goes on, fatigue creeps in.
And your body starts to lose control of those compensations.
That’s when the stress shifts…
Right into your lower back.
The TV Analogy I Always Use
I’ll usually say something like this:
“Think about the old TVs we used to have growing up…”
Big, heavy, kind of clunky.
They worked… but not like today.
Now everything is flat screen, high definition, smooth.
The system is just better.
Then I tell them:
“You’re trying to play a modern golf swing…with a body that’s still operating like that old TV.”
That usually clicks pretty quick.
Why It Keeps Happening
It’s not a flexibility issue alone. It’s not just strength either.
It’s that the body doesn’t have:
The right mobility in the hips
The right rotation through the mid-back
The control to handle speed repeatedly
So every swing asks the lower back to do a little more than it should.
And by hole 16…
It’s had enough.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Once golfers understand this, everything changes.
They stop chasing:
Quick fixes
Random stretches
“Just take a few days off” solutions
And they start thinking:
“What do I need to improve so my body can actually handle this?”
That’s the turning point.
Because It’s Not About Getting Through One Round
It’s about:
Playing 18 without thinking about your back
Finishing strong instead of hanging on
Being able to do it again next week… and the week after
That’s what most guys actually want.
They just haven’t been shown how to get there yet.
If This Sounds Like You
If you’ve ever said:
“I feel it more on the back 9…”
You’re not alone.
And it’s not random.
It’s just your body telling you:
“Hey… we need to upgrade this system a bit.”
